Celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti is taking on Nike, accusing the company of bribing Zion Williamson's mother to get Williamson to attend Duke.
In a tweet on Saturday, Avenatti tagged Nike and said, "Time to call it like it is," and, "No company or executive should be above the law."
He also posted, "Can you please ask Zion Williamson's mother...whether she was paid by Nike for bogus 'consulting services' in 2016/17 as part of a Nike bribe to get Zion to go to Duke? Thx."
Officials at Duke said the university is investigating Avenatti's bribe claim.
A statement sent to WRAL News from Kevin White, Duke's Vice President and Director of Athletics, read, “We are aware of the allegation and, as we would with any compliance matter, are looking into it. Duke is fully committed to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Every student athlete at Duke is reviewed to ensure their eligibility. With regard to men’s basketball: all recruits and their families are thoroughly vetted by Duke in collaboration with the NCAA through the Eligibility Center’s amateurism certification process.”
Avenatti is best known for representing porn actress Stormy Daniels in legal battles against President Donald Trump.
In March, Avenatti testified in his own defense in a civil case that included allegations he pocketed $1.6 million from a client as federal authorities were filing a criminal case against him that included that claim.
Avenatti, 48, faces charges in California for allegedly filing bogus tax returns to secure $4 million in loans and embezzling the client's settlement funds. He faces charges in New York of threatening to release damaging information against Nike if it didn't pay him and another lawyer up to $25 million.
